Historical Event on 8/7/1925

Monkombu Sambasivan Swaminathan was born in Kumbakonam. He went to Britain and took his Ph.D from the school of Agriculture in Cambridge in 1952. He developed high yielding strains of wheat and rice and accomplished difficult crosses in potato and jute species. In 1971, he was awarded The Ramon Magsaysay Award for generating a new confidence in the agricultural capabilities of the country. He was the Director of the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines. He is also the first agriculture scientist to win the Albert Einstein world science Award in 1986.

1/30/1948Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the spiritual leader of Indian independence, was shot and killed by a Hindu extremist. The 78-year-old Gandhi was shot at point-blank range as he was walking through a garden to a pergola, where he was to deliver his daily prayer meeting.
12/14/1901Gandhiji reaches Rajkot via Porbunder.
1/8/1956Tryambak Sitaram Karkhanis, founder of 'Maharashtra Drama Group' (Maharashtra Natak Mandali), died.
10/12/1998Sushma Swaraj is sworn in Delhi Chief Minister in place of Mr. Sahib Singh Verma
7/31/1952Bela Mitra, commander of ""Nari Vahini"" and activist of ""Azad Hind Fauj"", passed away. She also worked as partition refugee.
