9/28/1964The simmering dispute of India and Pakistan between the Hindus and Muslims erupted again in Kashmir. Fighting was also reported on this day in the Indian province of Rajasthan. China, which supported Pakistan in the dispute, sent massed troops on its border.

6/28/1972Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis died. He was the first founder of Indian statistical Institute to receive world recognition. In 1958, he started his national sample surveys. A Sample survey means assessing a situation by studying a part of it which would represent the whole, some of his proposals were included in the second five year paln. His original work made him elected as fellow of the Royal society in 1945.
2/10/1943Gandhi begins hunger strike to protest imprisonment. This strike lasted for 21 days till March 3.
9/1/1965Pakistan launched Operation 'Grand Slam' in Chhamb sector aimed at Akhnoor in Jammu. Indians had battled Pakistanis in air and on ground at Kashmir.
4/20/2000A full bench of the Madras High Court quashes the Tamil Nadu Government order making Tamil (or mother tongue) as the compulsory medium of instruction in all schools in the State up to Standard V.
9/22/1970Bandopadhyay Shardendu, modern Bengali poet, died.
