4/1/1998Prabhat Kumar, a 1963 batch IAS officer, was appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary of India. He succeeded T.S.R. Subramaniam and held the office till 31-10-2000.
12/20/2000The Government accepts the Eleventh Finance Commission recommendation to extend grants to all the States from the Incentive Fund.
3/19/1935British fire on 20,000 Muslims, killing 23.
3/18/1922Mohandas K. Gandhi ""Mahatma,"" the great spirit, sentenced by British authorities to six years in prison for sedition at Sabarmati. Gandhi was sentenced just eight days after he was arrested. The British acted hastily after government officials in London and India were criticized for not arresting him sooner. In London, the Secretary of State for India was forced to resign because of the controversy over Gandhi. In India, the arrests of Gandhi and other Indian nationalists had only increased sympathy for their cause.

1/8/1968The Official Languages Act, 1963 was amended. Accordingly, a provision was made in Section 3 (4) of the Act of the effect that employees of the Union Government proficient either in Hindi or in English may carry out their work effectively and that their interests may no be adversely affected merely because they are not proficient in both the languages. According to Section 3 (5), it is necessary for bringing to an end the use of English language for the Official purposes of the union that resolutions to this effect are passed by the legislatures of the states (i.e. states where Hindi is not the Official Language) and after considring these resolutions, a resolution is passed by both the houses of the Parliament to put an end to the use of English language.
