Historical Event on 2/17/1931
Viceroy of India Lord Irvin accepted Mahatma Gandhi as leader of people and invited him at Vicregal Lodge (now known at Rashtrapati Bhavan). After the event, Winston Churchill, who later became Prime Minister of Britain, referred Gandhiji as ""the Half-Naked Fakir of India"".

5/26/1739	Afghanistan was separated from the Indian empire as a result of a treaty signed between Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah and Nadir Shah.
10/4/1977	Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister, was released off the charges of corruption.
3/24/1987	First developmental launch of new generation rocket ASLV 'Stretched Rohini Satellite Series' (SROSS-1). This carried payload for launch vehicle performance monitoring and for gamma ray astronomy. This plunged within two minutes and 40 seconds of its launching.
5/8/1933	Gandhi starts hunger strike to protest the British repression of untouchables.
7/13/1998	India and Germany sign an agreement on promoting and protecting investment in Bonn.
