JAYA, an explosive new film shot on location in India, follows a teenage girl in a Mumbai street gang, who masquerades as a boy and makes a living as a thief, until the day she encounters a man who may be her long-lost father.
Writer/director Puja Maewal is an Indian American filmmaker from Texas, a UCLA film school grad student, and a Yale alum. She journeyed to India while on a Fulbright Grant to make this film. The movie is inspired by true events, stars real teenagers from the streets and slums of Mumbai, and is shot all over the city, in real locations.
A dark twist on Slumdog Millionaire, the film is told from the rarely seen perspective of an Indian street girl. Watch the trailer on Indiegogo, where the filmmakers are raising finishing funds to complete the movie, and become part of the project yourself: www.indiegogo /jaya
