Join us for this collaborative event featuring the music, food, and history of Korea and South Asia!
As part of Journey Chicago, one of the signature public programs of the Chicago Cultural Alliance, Navigating Borders brings two cultures together - South Asian and Korean - in one collaborative event. These cultures share a common history: a partition resulting in the formation of new countries. At this event, we invite participants to navigate the borders of these countries - India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, and North and South Korea - through discussion and shared celebration of culture.
Assistant Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania Hardeep Dhillon and Associate Professor of History at Northwestern University Ji-Yeon Yuh will open the event with talks reflecting on the historical repercussions of the borders imposed on each country by foreign nations. After a Q&A session, the event will transition to musical performances featuring the Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago (KPAC) and South Asian musicians Sandeep Bharadwaj (violin) and Subramanian Krishnamurthy (tabla/percussion). And finally, eventgoers are encouraged to exchange dialogue over light refreshments from South Asia and Korea!
