Kolkata, Feb 19 (IANS) After a three-year hiatus, student union elections were held in Jadavpur University on Wednesday, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (AVBP), the student wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), fielding candidates for the first time in the institution known for its firebrand Left politics.

The authorities said the elections passed off peacefully and successfully. The results will be declared on Thursday.

"The university authority sincerely expresses its thanks and gratitude to all sections of the university authority ... for rendering all necessary support," Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das said in a statement.

"By holding the students union elections peacefully, the university once again demonstrated the ability to sustain the institution's rich legacy of democracy," Das said.

The elections were held for posts of 12 office bearers as also over 600 class representatives.

The humanities faculty has highest number of students - over 4,000. There are 2,000 students in the science faculty and 700 in the engineering faculty.

The ABVP has fielded candidates for nine out of 12 office bearers of the union, adding a fresh dimension to the polls.

Sampriti Modak is the only female student backed by the ABVP who is in fray for post of General Secretary of the arts faculty.

"We are contesting to present more options to the students to choose," said the third year student of International Relations.

However, Modak alleged that her organisation was not allowed to canvass property, and their posters were torn and thrown into the university pond.

The Students Federation of India said the dominant issue is the overall attack across the country on educational institutions by "fascist forces".

"This university has always voted with the Left, and this time also we are favourites," said Subhayan Achrya Majumdar, the SFI candidate for the arts faculty General Secretary post.

The All India Democratic Socialist Organisation (AIDSO), All India Students Association (AISA), and the students wing of the state's ruling Trinamool Congress - Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) have also thrown their hat in the ring.
