Indian Muslim leader demands that Gandhi be released from prison. The Viceroy responded that this was only possible if Gandhi disassociated himself from the civil disobedience campaign.

1/1/1949 | A ceasefire eventually came into force. Under UN supervision, a negotiated Cease Fire Line was drawn up on an actual holding basis pending future settlements. This meandering, and at places militarily illogical line, ran some 700 kilometres from Chhamb in the South to a map reference point NJ 9842 in Ladakh in the North. The fighting was to continue for 15 months, with heavy RIAF involvement throughout, but despite being continuously on an operational footing throughout this period, the re-organisation and modernisation of the service continued unabated. |
8/5/1986 | Vellupillai Prabakaran, Tamil rebel leader, died. The vision of secession for Sri Lanka's Tamil minority may have come to an end. But so, too, might the violence that the nation had endured. Today, Tamil rebel leader Vellupillai Prabakaran accepted the peace accord signed last week by India and Sri Lanka. Prabakaran surrendered to Indian forces and his men turned over their weapons. The pact is seen as a compromise by the co-signers. But to the dejected Tamil leader, who has fought since childhood for a Tamil victory, it was a stinging defeat. The treaty creates an autonomous multi-religious zone in the eastern and northern provinces. The rebels dreamed and passed away for a separate state of their own. |
